Budget in Las Vegas means Downtown or off-Strip: the D, Golden Nugget, OYO or Circus Circus at $40–$90 midweek, plus a resort fee of $35–$45 a night that's charged on top of every rate you see. Mid-range on the Strip — Flamingo, Paris, Luxor, Treasure Island — runs $120–$220 midweek with $45 resort fees; top-end at Wynn, Aria, Cosmopolitan or the new Fontainebleau sits at $350–$800 with $50–$55 resort fees.
Outside Vegas the maths is simpler because resort fees are rare. Reno casino hotels (Peppermill, Atlantis, Grand Sierra) are $80–$180, Incline Village and Tahoe lakefront $250–$600 in season, and rural motels in Ely, Tonopah, Winnemucca or Jackpot $75–$130. Rates spike hardest for NFR rodeo (first two weeks of December in Vegas, doubling everything), New Year's Eve on the Strip, and July 4th at Lake Tahoe.
The Nevada booking trap: resort fees, and the areas people wrongly skip
The resort fee is Nevada's specific gotcha. Nearly every Las Vegas Strip and Downtown property, plus Reno's larger casinos and some Laughlin resorts, charges a mandatory nightly fee of $35–$55 that isn't in the headline rate and covers Wi-Fi, gym and pool access you'd otherwise assume were included. On a three-night Wynn stay that's an extra $165 plus tax; always add it before comparing to a non-casino option like the Waldorf Astoria or an Airbnb in Henderson.
The areas travellers wrongly skip are Boulder City (the only sensible base for Lake Mead and Hoover Dam sunrise), Genoa (Nevada's oldest settlement, 45 minutes from Tahoe with hot springs and no casino noise), and the US-50 corridor through Ely and the Ward Charcoal Ovens. Virginia City looks like a tourist trap on paper but the Silver Queen and Mackay Mansion put you in a working 1870s mining town 25 minutes from Reno for under $150.
Where to stay in Nevada: picking between the Strip, Reno and the small towns
For a first visit, stay on the Las Vegas Strip between Mandalay Bay and the Wynn — it's where the casino-resorts, shows and the monorail sit, and rooms run roughly $80–$250 midweek and $200–$600 at weekends. Downtown Las Vegas around Fremont Street is 20–30% cheaper and better for older, cash-table gamblers; Summerlin and Henderson (Green Valley Ranch, M Resort) suit families and drivers wanting quieter rooms 20 minutes off the Strip. Boulder City near Hoover Dam is the base for Lake Mead and has no casinos at all.
In the north, Reno and Sparks work as a cheaper Vegas alternative at $60–$150 a night, with Lake Tahoe and Incline Village on the Nevada shore charging $200–$500 in ski and summer season. The rural stops — Elko on I-80, Ely on US-50, Tonopah, Winnemucca, Beatty near Death Valley, Mesquite and Laughlin on the Arizona line, Pahrump west of Vegas, Jackpot on the Idaho border, plus historic Virginia City and Genoa — are $70–$130 motel country and mainly exist to break up long drives.
