Where to stay in Nevada: picking between the Strip, Reno and the small towns
For a first visit, stay on the Las Vegas Strip between Mandalay Bay and the Wynn — it's where the casino-resorts, shows and the monorail sit, and rooms run roughly $80–$250 midweek and $200–$600 at weekends. Downtown Las Vegas around Fremont Street is 20–30% cheaper and better for older, cash-table gamblers; Summerlin and Henderson (Green Valley Ranch, M Resort) suit families and drivers wanting quieter rooms 20 minutes off the Strip. Boulder City near Hoover Dam is the base for Lake Mead and has no casinos at all.
In the north, Reno and Sparks work as a cheaper Vegas alternative at $60–$150 a night, with Lake Tahoe and Incline Village on the Nevada shore charging $200–$500 in ski and summer season. The rural stops — Elko on I-80, Ely on US-50, Tonopah, Winnemucca, Beatty near Death Valley, Mesquite and Laughlin on the Arizona line, Pahrump west of Vegas, Jackpot on the Idaho border, plus historic Virginia City and Genoa — are $70–$130 motel country and mainly exist to break up long drives.

March to May and September to early November are the sweet spot for Las Vegas: daytime highs of 20–28°C and Strip rooms from about $120 midweek. June to August pushes 40°C+ in Vegas, Laughlin and Mesquite, so pool-resort rates actually drop midweek but conference weeks (CES in early January, MAGIC in February, EDC in mid-May) spike rooms 3–5x their normal price.
Northern Nevada runs on a different calendar. Lake Tahoe and Incline Village peak twice — July–August for the lake at $300+ a night, and December–March for skiing at Diamond Peak and Heavenly — while Reno is cheapest in November and early December outside of Hot August Nights and the Great Reno Balloon Race in September. Burning Man at Black Rock City the week before Labor Day empties Reno and doubles Winnemucca and Fallon motel rates.
Getting around Nevada: car, bus and the one train
You need a car for anything outside Las Vegas or Reno. Distances are long and mostly empty: Vegas to Reno is 440 miles on US-95 (7 hours), Vegas to Lake Tahoe 450 miles, Reno to Elko 290 miles on I-80, Vegas to Laughlin 100 miles, and the famous US-50 'Loneliest Road' from Fallon through Austin and Ely runs 400 miles with fuel stops 70+ miles apart.
Within Las Vegas the Deuce bus runs the Strip 24 hours for $6 a ride or $8 for 24 hours, and the monorail links MGM Grand to Sahara for $5.50. Reno has RTC buses but no useful rail. Amtrak's California Zephyr stops once daily at Reno, Winnemucca and Elko on its Chicago–Emeryville run — scenic, but not a practical way to get between Nevada towns. Harry Reid (LAS) and Reno-Tahoe (RNO) are the two airports; a Strip taxi from LAS is a flat $19–$27 plus fees.
