Northern Nevada runs on a different calendar. Getting around Nevada: car, bus and the one train
You need a car for anything outside Las Vegas or Reno. Distances are long and mostly empty: Vegas to Reno is 440 miles on US-95 (7 hours), Vegas to Lake Tahoe 450 miles, Reno to Elko 290 miles on I-80, Vegas to Laughlin 100 miles, and the famous US-50 'Loneliest Road' from Fallon through Austin and Ely runs 400 miles with fuel stops 70+ miles apart.
Within Las Vegas the Deuce bus runs the Strip 24 hours for $6 a ride or $8 for 24 hours, and the monorail links MGM Grand to Sahara for $5.50. Reno has RTC buses but no useful rail. Amtrak's California Zephyr stops once daily at Reno, Winnemucca and Elko on its Chicago–Emeryville run — scenic, but not a practical way to get between Nevada towns. Harry Reid (LAS) and Reno-Tahoe (RNO) are the two airports; a Strip taxi from LAS is a flat $19–$27 plus fees.
How many nights in Nevada and a sensible itinerary
Three nights is enough for the Strip alone: one evening walking Bellagio to the Cosmopolitan, one day at a pool or spa, one day-trip to Hoover Dam or Red Rock Canyon (both under 45 minutes from the Strip). Five to seven nights lets you add either Zion and Bryce over the Utah line, or Death Valley via Beatty, or a two-night detour to Laughlin and Lake Mohave.
For a proper Nevada road trip plan 10–14 nights: 3 in Las Vegas, 1 in Beatty for Death Valley, 1 in Tonopah, 2 on US-50 splitting Ely and Austin, 2 in Reno with a day up to Virginia City, and 2–3 at Incline Village or South Lake Tahoe. Fly into LAS and out of RNO (or the reverse) to avoid backtracking — one-way rental drop fees between the two are typically $75–$150.
