The genuinely good pools
Peppermill's outdoor pool complex is Reno's best: multiple pools, a proper hot tub, cabanas, and pool service that actually shows up. It's the closest thing Reno has to a Vegas pool scene, without the entry fees. Atlantis runs a smaller but well-maintained outdoor pool with a retractable dome that keeps it open shoulder-season; the indoor-outdoor flexibility matters in a town where June nights still drop into the 50s. Grand Sierra Resort's pool is enormous and often empty midweek — a genuine advantage if you want laps.
Whitney Peak downtown has a rooftop terrace but no swimming pool — don’t confuse the two. Renaissance Reno also skips a pool. If you want downtown plus a pool, Silver Legacy's rooftop pool at the Row is the only real option; it's small, but the mountain views compensate. Circus Circus's pool is dated but functional and included in a room rate that often sits under $70.
Season, temperature and honest expectations
Reno's high desert climate means pool weather is bimodal. May and September deliver warm afternoons and cold evenings — a hot tub becomes essential, not optional. July and August afternoons hit 95-100°F and pools genuinely feel refreshing rather than obligatory. October pool use is a gamble; some properties drain by the 15th. Atlantis and Peppermill both heat their pools into shoulder season, which extends the useful window by roughly a month on either end.
Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks runs a small outdoor pool that gets afternoon shade early, which shortens the usable hours. Best Western Airport Plaza has a decent pool for a business-tier property. If pools are your main reason to visit Reno, you’re in the wrong city — drive 45 minutes to Tahoe or fly south to Vegas. If you want a pool as a bonus, Peppermill and Atlantis deliver.
