Vegas gets a scary reputation from crime headlines but with 42 million annual visitors, the real risks look more like theft than violence.
The realistic risks
The Las Vegas Strip is heavily policed — foot patrols, cameras, private security at every property. Violent crime targeting tourists is rare. What is common: pickpocketing (especially at crowded fountain shows and Fremont Street), overserving-related trouble, and rideshare scams. Downtown Fremont is fine on the canopy blocks, sketchy 2 blocks north or west after dark. Reno's core is safe; 4th Street west of the arch has real problems. Off-highway breakdowns in remote areas are a bigger risk than any human.
Practical precautions
Don’t count winnings in the casino, don’t flash cash on the Strip, use Uber not unlicensed cabs from side streets. Lock hotel-room valuables in the safe — theft by co-guests and cleaners does happen. On road trips, tell someone your route, carry 3 gallons of water per person, and have paper directions in case your phone dies in a dead zone. If you break down on a lonely highway, stay with the vehicle. The state is 110,000 square miles with fewer than 3.2 million people; help can be hours away.
