Diamond Peak, Heavenly and Mt. Rose from opening day to closing, with lodging swings from $140 midweek to $650 on Presidents' Day.

Opening, peak and closing dates

Diamond Peak in Incline Village typically opens mid-December and closes mid-April. Heavenly at Stateline opens earlier (mid-to-late November on the California side, Nevada base by mid-December) and pushes into mid-to-late April. Mt. Rose above Reno often opens first — Thanksgiving weekend in a good year — thanks to elevation, and stays open into May.

Peak dates are Christmas week (December 26 through January 2), MLK weekend, Presidents' Day weekend, and any powder Saturday. Lift ticket walk-up rates hit $200-260 at Heavenly on peak days; Diamond Peak is more forgiving at $130-160. Ikon and Epic passes are the only sensible option for more than four days of skiing.

Where to stay and what it costs

Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe in Incline Village is the ski-in-adjacent luxury option: $220-350 midweek in January, $450-650 Christmas and Presidents' weekends. Hard Rock Hotel Stateline and Bally's (formerly MontBleu) offer casino-hotel value at Heavenly's base: $140-240 midweek, $300-500 peak. Harveys and Harrah's across the street are similar.

For the cheapest Nevada-side ski base, drive up daily from Carson City ($90-140 rooms, 35 minutes to Heavenly's Nevada side via Kingsbury) or Reno ($75-130, 45-60 minutes to Mt. Rose). This adds a chain-control risk after storms but cuts lodging cost by half or more.

Weather, chains and the March sweet spot

Storm cycles usually run 3-5 day windows with 1-3 feet of snow, followed by bluebird stretches. Chain controls hit US-50, Kingsbury Grade and Mt. Rose Highway during and immediately after storms; AWD with M+S-rated tires usually exempts you but carry chains regardless. Rental car agencies at Reno-Tahoe airport rarely permit chains without additional coverage — read the contract.

March is the underrated month. Snowpack is deep, days are longer (skiing until 4pm at Heavenly), sun is warmer, and midweek rates soften to $180-260 at properties that were $400 in February. Late March through early April brings spring skiing conditions: firm mornings, soft afternoons, deck beers at Tamarack Lodge, and rates approaching shoulder-season levels.

Before you book

What people ask before booking Reno.

When should I book Lake Tahoe for Presidents' Day weekend?

By early November. The three-night minimums at Hyatt Incline Village and the Stateline casino hotels sell out in December for that weekend, and last-minute options push $700+ or force you to Carson City.

Which Nevada-side resort is best for beginners?

Diamond Peak in Incline Village. It's smaller, less crowded and cheaper than Heavenly, with a good learning area and beginner terrain that isn’t overrun by advanced skiers cutting through.
