Las Vegas conventions that will wreck your trip (and dates to avoid)

CES, EDC, NFR, the F1 Grand Prix and six more that double room rates — a real calendar of what to dodge if you’re on vacation.
The big four
CES in early January is the largest: 130,000+ attendees, first full week of January. Rooms across the entire valley run $400-800 at properties that normally cost $150. EDC — Electric Daisy Carnival — hits mid-May for three nights and does the same, with additional airport chaos as 150,000 attendees fly in over 48 hours. Book something else those weeks or embrace the crowd.
NFR (National Finals Rodeo) runs December 5-14 approximately. Rates spike 60-100% and the town shifts culturally: cowboy hats, country bars packed, western wear stores full. The Las Vegas Grand Prix in mid-November is the newest disaster — three nights that push Strip rooms to $600-1,500, with grandstands blocking sidewalks for a week either side of race weekend.
Second-tier events worth checking
Super Bowl weekend fills Vegas year-round now that it's a football town, with rates doubling early February regardless of who's playing. March Madness first and second weekends pack every sportsbook — book by December for those weekends. World of Concrete in mid-to-late January is a huge B2B show that overlaps or trails CES and keeps rates elevated a second week.
SEMA in early November is 160,000 automotive industry attendees, comparable to CES. MAGIC apparel shows in February and August fill the Mandalay Bay convention center. AWS re:Invent in late November-early December is 50,000 tech attendees and books hotels near the Venetian solid. NAB in April brings 100,000 broadcasters. Any of these will double your room rate if you overlap by accident.
How to check and what to do
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority publishes a rolling convention calendar 12-24 months out. Check it before booking flights. If your dates overlap a major show, either shift by a week or book off-Strip (Green Valley Ranch in Henderson, Red Rock Casino in Summerlin, or downtown at Fremont Street) where rates stay closer to normal.
Airport lines at LAS are the second casualty. During CES and EDC arrival days, security waits hit 90+ minutes and rideshare pickup queues stretch to an hour. Fly midweek during convention weeks even if you’re not attending — Sunday and Monday arrivals for a CES week are the worst travel days of the Vegas year.
