Why January is the cheapest month in Las Vegas

After CES ends on January 10, Strip rooms drop below $50 and stay there for three weeks — here's exactly how to use that window.

The CES cutoff and what happens after

CES runs the first full week of January and fills every hotel within 20 miles at inflated rates ($400-800 at properties that normally cost $150). The moment CES wraps — typically January 9 or 10 — rates fall off a cliff. From roughly January 11 through January 31, midweek Strip rooms at Flamingo, Linq, Excalibur, Luxor and Harrah's regularly sell for $35-60. Downtown at Fremont, the D or Golden Nugget you’ll see $30-45.

Weekends bounce up but only to $90-140 at those same mid-tier properties. Higher-end (Aria, Cosmopolitan, Wynn) sits at $180-280 midweek versus $400+ in October. MLK weekend mid-month is the one blip — rates roughly double for those three nights. Otherwise it's the deepest value window of the calendar.

What the trade-offs actually are

Weather is cool: 58F highs, 40F overnight, occasional rain. Almost all seasonal pools are closed. Mandalay Bay's beach stays open (heated), Circa's Stadium Swim runs year-round, and a handful of spa pools operate. If your Vegas trip is built around pool days, January is the wrong month. If it's built around shows, restaurants, gambling, walking around, and day trips, it's the best month.

Restaurant reservations are wide open — you can walk into Carbone or Beauty & Essex at 7pm on a Tuesday. Show tickets discount heavily on Tix4Tonight and directly. Red Rock and Valley of Fire are ideal in January: 55F afternoons, no heat risk, clear air. Bring layers for evening walks and one light jacket.

How to actually book it

Watch the calendars: CES 2027 dates are already published (January 6-9), and rates crash starting January 10-11. Book two or three weeks ahead directly with the resort for the best flexibility — most Strip properties allow free cancellation up to 72 hours out. Comp offers from casino loyalty programs (MGM Rewards, Caesars Rewards) are their most generous in this window.

Fly midweek Tuesday-to-Thursday for the cheapest airfares to LAS. Stack a $45 room, $18 airport rideshare and $30-40 daily food budget and Vegas becomes one of the cheapest US city breaks of the year. The catch: don’t book non-refundable and then discover you wanted a pool — that's how January disappoints people.

Only at heated pools: Mandalay Bay's main pool, Circa's Stadium Swim, and some resort spa pools. The big seasonal pool decks at Encore, Aria and Caesars are closed until March.
