Las Vegas to Reno by Car: The 7-Hour Driving Route

The route: US-95 north
US-95 is the direct shot — 445 miles, roughly 7 hours of driving without stops. It is a two-lane highway most of the way with long empty stretches. The scenery is basin and range: bare mountains, dry lakebeds, the occasional ghost town. Cell service disappears for 30-40 miles at a time between Beatty and Tonopah, and again between Tonopah and Hawthorne. Fill up at every open station. This is not a road for a low fuel light.
Five stops worth making
Beatty (2 hours from Vegas) — coffee at the Death Valley Nut and Candy Company, and the Goldwell Open Air Museum sculpture park 4 miles west in Rhyolite ghost town. Tonopah (3.5 hours) — the Mizpah Hotel for lunch and the Tonopah Historic Mining Park for an hour of headframes and shafts. Hawthorne (5 hours) — the Hawthorne Ordnance Museum, free and genuinely strange. Walker Lake (5.5 hours) — a 10-minute pullout at Sportsman's Beach. Fallon (6.5 hours) — Middlegate Station 50 miles east on US-50 if you have time, otherwise push on.
Where to sleep at each end
If you leave Vegas at 8am with those stops, you arrive Reno around 6pm. Sleep at the Renaissance Reno on the river or the Whitney Peak downtown. If you would rather split the drive, Tonopah at the Mizpah Hotel is the natural halfway point — the property is genuinely haunted (or claims to be) and the rooms are period-restored. Do not try to sleep in Hawthorne or Mina — the options are grim.
