Lamoille Canyon, Ruby Mountains
The best fall color in Nevada and among the best in the interior West. Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway runs 12 miles from NV-227 up to Roads End trailhead through massive aspen groves at 6,500-9,000 feet. Peak is October 5-15 in most years, with lower elevations holding color into the third week. It's a 20-minute drive from Elko, which makes it absurdly easy.
Elko has a good stock of chain hotels at $85-140 (Hampton Inn, Best Western, Ledgestone) plus casino-hotels downtown. Weekends in early October fill fast with photographers and hunters — book two weeks out. Combine with the Cowboy Poetry Gathering venues, the California Trail Interpretive Center and the Star Hotel for Basque family-style dinner.
Lake Tahoe and Hope Valley
Hope Valley south of Tahoe (technically California but accessed most easily from the Nevada side via US-50) is the classic Tahoe-area aspen show. Peak runs October 1-15. Drive US-50 over Spooner Summit, south on NV-207/CA-88 into Hope Valley — the meadows along the West Carson River light up gold. Combine with a Marlette Lake hike on the Nevada side for aspen groves at 8,000 feet.
Stateline and Incline Village lodging is at shoulder-season rates ($180-340) and the whole region is quiet before ski season. This is arguably the best two-week window at Tahoe: warm days, cold nights, gold trees, no crowds, no snow yet. Book by August for the first weekend of October.
Great Basin and smaller spots
Great Basin National Park's Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive climbs through aspen and bristlecone country. Peak is late September through mid-October, with the road often closing to the summit by late October when snow hits. Stay in Baker (population under 100, a few small motels at $90-140) or Ely 65 miles west, which has more options at $80-160 including the Hotel Nevada.
Other honest mentions: Mt. Charleston above Vegas has aspens and turning oaks at 8,000 feet peaking mid-October, a 45-minute drive from the Strip. Genoa and the Carson Valley have cottonwoods and vineyards turning through October. Virginia City's surrounding hills brown out more than gold up but the town's Halloween events are worth the trip.
