Las Vegas: the main event
Spring break in Vegas isn’t one week — it's a rolling three-to-four week wave from mid-March through mid-April as different universities and school districts stagger. The busiest windows are typically the second and third weeks of March. Pool parties reopen around March 1 at most resorts and hit full stride by mid-month. Rates run $180-320 at mid-tier Strip properties versus $120 for the same rooms in February.
March Madness overlaps and amplifies. The first and second weekends of the tournament fill sportsbooks at Westgate, Circa's Book, and every casino book on the Strip. Book pool cabanas at Encore Beach Club, Wet Republic or Ayu Dayclub at least six weeks out for spring break weekends. Weather is genuinely warm by St. Patrick's Day — 75-82F afternoons — which drives the whole thing.
Lake Tahoe and Reno
Tahoe spring break is ski-focused and legitimately busy. Heavenly, Diamond Peak and Mt. Rose all run at capacity through the last two weekends of March. Presidents' Day weekend in February technically kicks off the spring rush; from there through mid-April it's steady. Rates at Hyatt Incline Village and the Stateline casinos run $280-450 midweek, $400-650 weekends.
Reno absorbs overflow. Rooms downtown at Peppermill, Silver Legacy and the Grand Sierra run $110-180 during spring break weeks — a fraction of Tahoe pricing, with Mt. Rose 25 minutes uphill. This is the value play for skiing spring break, and it's not a secret anymore.
Desert parks and quieter alternatives
Valley of Fire, Red Rock and Zion (technically Utah but a 2.5-hour drive from Vegas) all get busy in mid-March. Weather is perfect for hiking — 70-80F days — and college groups do overnight camping trips. Valley of Fire's campground fills weekends; Red Rock's scenic drive backs up entry gates by 10am. Go early or push to a weekday.
For an actual quiet Nevada spring break, aim for the smaller options: Great Basin (still cold at elevation and half-closed), Ely or Elko, or Mesquite for golf at 75F and rooms at $95-160. Laughlin on the Colorado River is a genuine spring break destination in its own quieter way — cheap rooms ($60-110), river tubing and a much older crowd than the Strip.
