About Big Sky

Unlike a traditional town, Big Sky is a collection of distinct areas: the Mountain Village at the base of Lone Mountain, the Meadow Village in the valley, and the Canyon along the Gallatin River. Each has its own character and amenities. The resort is a major destination for outdoor recreation, with terrain for all skill levels and a growing village with shops and restaurants.

Summer brings fly-fishing on the Gallatin River, golf at the Big Sky Golf Course, and access to trails in the surrounding national forest. Wildlife such as elk, deer, and moose are common. The area has a small permanent population, but visitor services are well developed. Whether you come for powder or wildflowers, Big Sky offers a mountain experience with the comforts of a modern resort.

Where to stay in Big Sky

Mountain Village. The base area of Big Sky Resort, with ski-in/ski-out access, the Explorer Gondola, and a concentration of lodges, condos, and restaurants.

Meadow Village. The valley floor area near the Big Sky Golf Course, with a mix of vacation rentals, local businesses, and easier access to the highway.

Canyon. A stretch along the Gallatin River south of Meadow Village, known for fly-fishing access and riverside accommodations.

Moonlight Basin. A private community on the north side of Lone Mountain, with its own lodge and ski terrain connected to Big Sky Resort.

Getting there and around

Big Sky is about an hour's drive from Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) via US Highway 191. From West Yellowstone, it is roughly 45 minutes north on the same highway. Rental cars are the most flexible option; shuttle services and private transfers are also available from the airport. Once in Big Sky, a free local bus system connects the Mountain Village, Meadow Village, and Canyon areas during peak seasons. Having a car is useful for exploring beyond the resort, but not essential if you stay near the base.

When to go

Winter (December to March) is prime for skiing and snowboarding, with reliable snow and a range of terrain. Summer (June to September) offers hiking, biking, golf, and fly-fishing, with mild temperatures and long daylight hours. Spring and fall are quieter, with variable weather and some services limited. If you want both winter sports and easy access to Yellowstone, late winter or early summer can work, but check road openings in Yellowstone.
