About Taos

In the early 20th century, Taos became an art colony, drawing painters who founded the Taos Society of Artists. That legacy continues in galleries around the plaza and at the Harwood Museum of Art and the Blumenschein Home and Museum. The Rio Grande Gorge, a dramatic rift carved by the river, lies just northwest of town and is spanned by the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge.

Outdoor recreation is central to Taos: hiking in the Carson National Forest, rafting the Rio Grande, and skiing at Taos Ski Valley. The town's elevation and dry climate create sharp contrasts between sun and shade, and between day and night. Taos also retains strong traditions such as the Taos Pueblo Powwow and the annual Taos Fall Arts Festival.

Taos Plaza and Historic District. This central area puts you within walking distance of the plaza, museums, and many galleries, with adobe architecture throughout.

Taos Ski Valley. A mountain village about 20 miles northeast of town, it offers slopeside lodging and access to ski lifts and summer hiking trails.

Ranchos de Taos. A historic community south of town, home to the San Francisco de Asís Church, a landmark painted by Georgia O'Keeffe and photographed by Ansel Adams.

Getting there and around

Taos is reached by road, most commonly via New Mexico State Road 68 from Española or U.S. Route 64 from the east. Once in town, a car is useful for reaching Taos Pueblo, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, and Taos Ski Valley, though the plaza area is walkable. Some local buses and shuttles serve the ski valley in winter.

When to go

Taos is a year-round destination, but the most comfortable weather for exploring is from late spring through early fall, when trails and the Rio Grande Gorge are accessible. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms, and fall offers clear skies and golden aspens. Winter is ski season at Taos Ski Valley, with snow in the mountains and colder temperatures in town. Spring can be windy and dry.
