Mesquite sits on I-15 exactly on the Arizona line, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, so most visitors arrive by car from Harry Reid airport and the Las Vegas Valley. This is a drive-between-things town, not a walk-between-things one: downtown is really just Mesquite Boulevard, a strip of stucco strip malls, gas stations and the three casino towers spaced a mile or so apart, with Pioneer Boulevard running parallel past the older Mormon-era houses. Sidewalks along Mesquite Boulevard are wide, empty and built for cars rather than pedestrians. The Beehive State starts 15 miles east, and the Grand Canyon North Rim is a possible 4-hour day trip.
When to go
The North Rim of the Grand Canyon, about 4 hours by car via US-89A, is a genuine day trip only in summer, when the rim road is open roughly mid-May to mid-October; it closes to cars in winter. Most visitors treat it as a one-way detour on a longer Utah loop rather than a there-and-back day from Mesquite.
