What to expect at Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area
Sloan Canyon hides in plain sight: 48,000 acres of BLM land where south Henderson's suburbs literally end at the trailhead fence. The centerpiece is the Petroglyph Canyon, a mile-long slot with over 300 panels of rock art carved into black basalt by ancestral Southern Paiute, Patayan and earlier peoples across 1,000+ years. It's a National Conservation Area — no fees, no crowds, and a genuine archaeological wonder half an hour from the Strip.
Park at the Nawghaw Poa trailhead at the end of a residential street (Google Maps handles it fine), sign the register at the kiosk, and hike 2 miles down a sandy wash into Petroglyph Canyon. The panels start suddenly on the left about 1.9 miles in — most visitors walk past the first ones. Don’t touch anything, don’t chalk, and be out before dark; the trailhead gate is unstaffed but the canyon has no lighting.

The trailhead is open sunrise-sunset every day. The Visitor Contact Station on Nawghaw Poa Road closes Tuesday-Wednesday and federal holidays.
No booking to hike. Ranger-led interpretive walks require free reservation via blm.gov, opening 2 weeks ahead.
