Staying in Laughlin

Laughlin began as a bait shop on the Colorado River until Don Laughlin bought it in 1966 and turned it into a nine-casino strip along the water. Ten hotel-casinos now line Casino Drive on the Nevada bank, linked by a riverwalk and shuttle boats, right across the river from Bullhead City, Arizona. The town holds 7,000 people but swells to five times that in winter, when RV parks fill with Canadian and Midwestern retirees escaping the cold. At 9pm the riverwalk is busy with casino-hoppers and the Colorado Belle paddlewheeler is lit up like a wedding cake; weekends bring bikers, and the April River Run is one of the biggest motorcycle rallies in the west. The exception is Avi Resort & Casino out at 10000 Aha Macav Pkwy, away from the strip. This is a place for budget gamblers, snowbirds and anyone who wants a river view with their slot machine, and the hotels match: casinos, bars and 24-hour front desks rather than dining variety. Couples and short-break visitors who want to walk the riverwalk between properties are best served; families have arcades at the Riverside and Aquarius and bowling at the Riverside and Laughlin River Lodge.

Most visitors drive or walk across the Laughlin Bridge, which connects Casino Drive to Bullhead City in under five minutes on foot. Some casinos run free shuttle buses across the river for guests staying on the Arizona side, and the bridge is the main crossing today, though older listings still reference the passenger ferry that ran before it opened. Winter is when Laughlin fills: the population swells to five times its 7,000 as Canadian and Midwestern retirees escape the cold in the RV parks. The last weekend of April brings Bike Week and the Laughlin River Run, one of the biggest motorcycle rallies in the west, when hotels triple and the riverwalk is all Harleys, so go then only if that is the point of the trip. July and August are the months to avoid, when desert heat sits at 110°F+ and the river doesn't cool it off much.
