Plan around snow and summer crowds rather than a single season. February means 10-foot snowbanks in the Stateline area, and Mount Rose Highway requires chains or AWD any time it snows. On July weekends Sand Harbor's parking lot fills by mid-morning, so arrive by 8am or come after 4pm when the light turns gold on the granite.
