Staying in Kings Beach

Kings Beach is a year-round base on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, at the California–Nevada state line with Crystal Bay immediately to the east. Summer brings swimmers, kayakers and paddleboarders to the lake, while trails in the Tahoe National Forest and around Brockway Summit serve hikers and mountain bikers. In winter, skiers and snowboarders head for the region's downhill and cross-country areas. The town centre along State Route 28 is compact and walkable, with restaurants, cafés and equipment rentals.

The hotels here cluster in three spots. Several sit in Kings Beach itself, including The Gingerbread Cottage on Steelhead Avenue 0.5 km from the centre, The Bernstein Bear Cabin on Aaron Avenue, and the townhomes and condos around Commonwealth Drive and Bass Avenue. Others are in the Brockway Springs and Brockway Shores areas just west of the centre, on Brockway Springs Drive and Chipmunk Street. Most are houses, townhomes and condos with kitchens and fireplaces, so they suit couples, families and small groups on a short break who want space and a base for the outdoors rather than a staffed hotel.

Getting there and around

Kings Beach is on California State Route 28 on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. The nearest major airport is Reno–Tahoe International Airport in Nevada, about 50 miles to the northeast; Sacramento International Airport is roughly 120 miles to the southwest. By car from Reno, the usual approach is via Interstate 80 and then State Route 267 over Brockway Summit, or via State Route 28 from the east. From the San Francisco Bay Area, take Interstate 80 to Truckee and then State Route 267. There is no rail service to Kings Beach. Public buses connect the north shore communities, and a local trolley runs in summer. A car is useful for reaching trailheads and ski areas.

When to go

Summer, June to September, is the most popular time, with warm days for swimming, kayaking and hiking, though afternoons can bring thunderstorms. Winter, December to March, suits skiers and snowboarders, but snow chains or four-wheel drive are often needed on mountain roads. Spring and autumn are quieter, with cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, and some businesses reduce their hours in the shoulder seasons.
