About Crested Butte

The town is known for its long winters, deep snowpack, and access to public land. In summer it draws hikers, wildflower viewers, and mountain bikers, with the surrounding peaks and passes forming the core of the attraction. The population is small and the pace is unhurried; most services, shops, and restaurants are within a few blocks of Elk Avenue.

Crested Butte sits at roughly 8,900 feet, and nearby mountains reach above 12,000 feet. Visitors should allow time to adjust to the altitude and check seasonal road conditions, since some routes close in winter. The nearest larger town is Gunnison to the south, and commercial air service is available at Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport.

Where to stay in Crested Butte

Downtown / Elk Avenue. The historic core, where most shops, restaurants, and bars are within walking distance of the lodgings. Staying here suits visitors who want to be close to town rather than at the mountain base.

Mount Crested Butte. The base area of the ski mountain, a few miles north of downtown, with slopeside condos and hotels. It is the practical choice for winter skiing and summer lift-served trails.

Plaza / Snowmass Road area. A cluster of condominium buildings near the mountain access, offering self-catering units with kitchens. It sits between the base area and the town, with shuttle service in winter.

Crested Butte South. A residential subdivision several miles downvalley, quieter and more spread out. It requires a car or shuttle for access to the town and the ski area.

Getting there and around

Most visitors arrive by air at Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport, about 30 miles south, with seasonal direct flights from several U.S. hubs; Denver International Airport is a longer drive over mountain passes. By road, the main approach is U.S. 50 to Gunnison, then Colorado 135 north to Crested Butte. Once in town, Elk Avenue and the base area are walkable, and a free shuttle connects downtown and Mount Crested Butte in winter. A car is useful for reaching trailheads and other parts of the valley.

When to go

Winter, roughly late November through early April, is the ski season and the busiest period, with cold temperatures and heavy snow. Summer, from June to September, brings mild days, wildflowers, and the widest range of hiking and biking. Spring and autumn are quieter and can be muddy or unpredictable in the mountains. The town's events calendar is fullest in summer and around the winter holidays.
