About Telluride

Telluride's history is visible in its preserved Victorian-era buildings and the old miners' homes that line the streets. The town has a year-round population of around 2,500, but visitor numbers swell during ski season and summer festival weekends. The free gondola runs from early morning until late evening and is a practical way to move between the town and the Mountain Village. Because of its high altitude, visitors should allow time to adjust before strenuous activity. The surrounding San Juan Mountains offer some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in Colorado, with peaks rising above 13,000 feet. Whether you come for winter sports or summer trails, Telluride's layout and setting make it easy to explore without a car once you are in town.

Where to stay in Telluride

Telluride Town. The historic core along Colorado Avenue offers walkable access to shops, restaurants, and the gondola station, with a mix of hotels and condos. Staying here puts you in the middle of the National Historic Landmark District.

Mountain Village. A purpose-built resort area on the mountain above town, connected by the free gondola, with ski-in/ski-out access and a concentration of hotels and condominiums. It is quieter than the town but still has dining and services.

Lawson Hill. A residential neighbourhood just east of the town centre, within walking distance of Colorado Avenue and the gondola. It offers a quieter stay with some lodgings and easy access to trails.

Pandora. An area at the eastern edge of Telluride, near the base of the ski area and the Pandora Mill, with some lodging options and proximity to hiking trails. It is a short walk or drive from the town core.

Getting there and around

The nearest major airport is Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), about 65 miles north of Telluride; shuttle services and rental cars are available there. Telluride Regional Airport (TEX) is closer but has a limited flight schedule and sits on a mesa with a steep approach. By car, Telluride is reached via Colorado Highway 145 from the north or south, or via Highway 62 from the west. Once in town, most areas are walkable, and the free gondola connects Telluride with Mountain Village. A local bus system, the Galloping Goose, also provides free service around town and to some outlying areas. A car is useful for exploring beyond the immediate valley, but not necessary for daily needs in town.

When to go

Winter (December to March) is prime for skiing and snowboarding, with Telluride Ski Resort operating and the town busy during holidays. Summer (June to September) offers warm days, wildflowers, and numerous festivals, making it popular for hiking and mountain biking. Spring and autumn are quieter, with variable weather and some businesses operating on reduced schedules. If you want to avoid crowds, late spring and early autumn can be good times to visit, though some high-elevation trails may still have snow into June.
