Getting there and around
The nearest major airport is Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), about 65 miles north of Telluride, with shuttle services and rental cars available there. Telluride Regional Airport (TEX) is closer but has a limited flight schedule and sits on a mesa with a steep approach. By car, Telluride is reached via Colorado Highway 145 from the north or south, or via Highway 62 from the west. Once in town, most areas are walkable, and the free gondola connects Telluride with Mountain Village. The Galloping Goose bus also runs free around town and to some outlying areas. A car helps for exploring beyond the valley but is not needed for daily needs in town.
When to go
Winter, December to March, is prime for skiing and snowboarding, with Telluride Ski Resort operating and the town busy during holidays. Summer, June to September, brings warm days, wildflowers and numerous festivals, and is popular for hiking and mountain biking. Spring and autumn are quieter, with variable weather and some businesses on reduced schedules. To avoid crowds, late spring and early autumn work well, though some high-elevation trails may still hold snow into June. At about 8,750 feet, allow time to acclimatise before strenuous activity.
